Pocketing Your Watch
As opposed to wristwatches, pocket watches are meant to be placed on coat or trousers pockets. They are often attached by a chain to a belt loop, a lapel, or a waistcoat. In contrast to the digital displays in most of our modern watches, pocket watches adapts the traditional analog display.
Pocket watches that are secured by chains are often decorated on those chains with ornaments. These chains together with their ornaments are also called fobs. Unlike the wristwatch, pocket watches have hinged covers that remain closed until and unless you open it to look at the time. This is to protect the watch face and the workings of the pocket watch. Pocket watches usually have fasteners too, which go through a button hole and worn in a jacket or a waist coat. This puts us in mind of train conductors.
Pocket watches have been here for centuries now. The first mention of a new pocket watches ever made was in 1462. There are now two common types of pocket watches. There is the open-faced that can be of the wind-up variety called a winding pocket watches. The other is the covered pocket watch or the hunter-type version. A pocket watch has a seconds dial placed at six oclock, with the stem for the chain at twelve oclock. The hunter stem then is at three oclock. Reading a pocket watch means you have to position the watch at a ninety-degree angle with the stem pointed to the right.
Todays pocket watches uses the quartz movement feature regardless of whether it is open-faced or hunter case.
While pocket watches are not as common or popular as the modern wristwatches, theyre still deemed a classy, decorative, and prestigious timepieces that double as a decorative wardrobe accessory as well. Pocket watches and pocket watch accessories make great gifts and are usually given as retirement presents. Theyre especially good sentimental gifts as their metal cover inside and out can easily be engraved with special messages of many characters.
